ARRIVAL IN QUITO CITY

Our first day is an informational and acclimation day. We have no scheduled activities. One of our trip leaders will meet you at the hotel and there will be plenty of time to discuss details and to answer any questions you may have regarding the adventure. Depending on arrival time, you can spend your day relaxing or exploring Quito and the surrounding area.

About Quito: Quito is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ecuador's capital. The city is considered The Cultural Capital of South America and the second most important city of the old Inca Empire. Due to its strategic location cradled in the middle of the Andes, fantastic day trip can be organized such as: Quito City tour, including a trip to the equator line, Mindo Cloud forest, Cotopaxi national park, Quilotoa crater lake, Otavalo indian market, Papallacta hot springs, Pululahua inhabitant crater and many more.

HIKING INSIDE THE COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, we will leave Quito driving southwards along the beautiful Avenue of Volcanos, while getting the chance to see the colorful Andean fields. On our way we will reach 12,000 feet. After arriving at the Cotopaxi National Park, we will go hiking around Limpiopungo lagoon of the foot hills of the Ruminñahui volcano, from here we will have the best views of the Cotopaxi Volcano, highest active volcano in the world.

In the afternoon we will continue our drive towards the Llanganates National Park, which is known as the sacred mountain, until we reach the town of Baños, located at the entrance of the Amazon. Here we can enjoy the best night life by drinking cocktails and dancing salsa.

BIKING IN THE LLANGANATES NATIONAL PARK

This morning we will mountain bike from the Llanganates National Park down to the Pastaza River Canyon, enjoying the beautiful scenery of the cloud forest. The road brings us through some Andean farms and a beautiful canyon with many waterfalls.
While descending into the jungle, we will have a breathtaking view of Baños, very well known for its spectacular location right on the foothills of the Tungurahua volcano, which is active since 1999. It is the main attraction of this region. In the afternoon we will have some time to explore the town and then we will enjoy the best night life.

ROAD OF WATERFALLS AND CANYONING IN THE AMAZON

This morning we will hit the road of the waterfalls. The first stop will be at the Bride´s Veil waterfall, where we will take the Tarabita (cable car) to get across the Pastaza River. Then we will hike down to the Pailon del Diablo waterfall, the second highest in Ecuador. Later, we will go deeper into the jungle inside the Llanganates National Park. The name "llanganates" comes from the local native language and means "beautiful mountain". 600 years ago, the Incas hid here their golden treasure. Explorers spent many years looking for this treasure, but some of it has disappeared in this thick pristine jungle.
During a 3-hour hike through the tropical jungle, we will climb along several white-water waterfalls. This is a humid and warm area which will make our experience even more demanding, so get ready to wear your rubber boots and enjoy the magnificence of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our local native guide will tell us about the incredible nature and wildlife we will see. We will spend the night at the Local Basic Jungle Lodge.

JATUNYACU RIVER RAFTING AND VOLCANIC HOT SPRINGS

We greet the day by preparing our gear to paddle the wild waves of the Jatunyacu River, located one hour away from the entrance of the Llanganates National Park. The beauty of this river will inspire you and reveal the magic of the Amazon rainforest. After a very important safety briefing from our rafting guides, we will start our class III rafting expedition down the Jatunyacu River, which is well known for its clean water and awesome rapids. We will have a lot of fun playing some games and also exploring one of the canyons. The end of the journey offers us a stop for a picnic, prepared by our guides.
We conclude our day with a drive back up to the Andes, stopping to visit the paradise of hummingbirds in Guango Reserve and finally continuing up to the volcanic hot springs resort, where we will spend the night.

HIKING THE CLOUD FOREST, HUMMINGBIRDS PARADISE & OTAVALO MARKET

After a 2-hour bird-watching tour through the cloud forest, we will travel across the Andes to visit the Equator Line and then Otavalo and its amazing indigenous handicraft market. Here, we will have a stop for shopping or exploring the market.
Later in the afternoon, we will be transferred to the slopes of Imbabura volcano to enjoy a nice cultural encounter with the local people and learn the traditional way of living while sharing the daily activities with the families. In the evening we will take part of an organic cooking lesson by using the local products. In the late afternoon we will go to a charming hacienda.

TREKKING THE LOOP OF CUICOCHA CRATER LAKE

Today our challenge will be a 5-hour hike around the Cuicocha crater lake, with breathtaking views of the active volcano and the amazing valleys which are located in Cotacachi-Cayapas ecological reserve. On this trek, we will reach an altitude of 11880ft and hike 9 miles around the crater.
At the end of our hike, we will take a boat ride to the centre of the crater to observe the activity of this volcano, and to watch bubbles coming up from the centre of the caldera. Once here, you will be able to jump in and go for a refreshing swim in the volcanic waters. In the afternoon we will drive back to Quito.

SANTA MARTHA & CARIBBEAN COLOMBIA

In the morning, there will be a transfer to the airport and a flight to Santa Martha Colombia, located in the Caribbean coast and famous place that takes the name of the Santa Martha Mountain range. This is the range that we will explore since it is the magical mountain that keeps the mysterious LOST CITY of the tayrona culture and is full of outstanding natural attractions, including beaches, national parks, local cultures, old ruins, colorful coral reefs.

Once we get to Santa Martha, we will be transfered to Tanganga village, the best site to explore the range and one small mecca for tourism located just outside of the big city, on a beautiful beach, and probably the best diving site in Colombia.

EXPLORE TAGANGA VILLAGE FREE DAY

Today is a free day. Choose from a big menu of activities such as: scuba diving, snorkeling, Minca cloud forest, biking and coffee farms visit, waterfalls, fishing tours, and more.

The location of this beautiful fishing village allowed us to organize fantastic day adventure trips toward Tayrona national park; and also to enjoy your time at the beach or just walking around is also very nice.

This location also boasts fantastic cuisine and vibrant nightlife!

TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK

In the morning, we will head north along the Carribean coast. We will arrive at one of the most beautiful national parks of the Caribbean, the divers' paradise of Tayrona Park. Here, the white sandy beaches of the coral reefs contrast with the tropical forests of the Santa Marta mountain range, a paradise home for more than 350 species of birds and 100 types of mammals living among flower gardens situated along the different trails in the park.

We will camp by the beach at Cabo San Juan camp site where we will spend a magical night sleeping in a hammock.

TAGANGA VILLAGE

After breakfast, we will go for a 4 hour round trip hike to the Pueblito Ruins located 270 meters above sea level, where we can find more than 200 terraces which are the remains of one small village belonging to the Tayrona culture which dates back to between 800 ac to 1500 Ac. They also carved the volcanic rocks of Santa Martha Range to build their temples and their trails that connect with the lost city which was a commercial village for trading products from the highlands and the Caribbean coast.

After lunch, we will have some free time to enjoy the beach before we take our scenic boat ride along the coast of the Tayrona National Park back to Taganga Village.

LOST CITY TREK

We will start with an adventurous 3 hour drive by 4×4, in a small road climbing up to the Santa Martha Range, to the small countryside town, which is called Mamey. Here, we will have our lunch and get energy to set up for our first part of the trek to the lost city. After 4 hours, we will arrive to our first campsite where we will spend the night in the tropical forest.

The overall climb on the first day is about 520 meters. We will have a hearty, well-earned, and relaxing dinner by candlelight.

LOST CITY TREK

Our second day, we will hike for approximately 5 hours. We will arrive at the Indian Kogi's settlements in the valley of the Buritaca river, which will be good opportunities for you to get a feeling for the Indian cultures and their own way of living in these pristine villages.

For lunch, we will already have arrived at our campsite and we will take it a little easy in the afternoon. So you can enjoy the beauty of the jungle. You can also take a refreshing dip in the Buritaca River.

LOST CITY TREK

This is one of the most challenging days of the trek, crossing the Buritaca river nine times in 5 hours to get to our third campsite and spend the night very close to the famous LOST CITY (Ciudad Perdida). You will feel the weather changing and the ecosystems morphing as we get higher in altitude and close to the sacred place.

THE LOST CITY OF TATYRONA CULTURE}

This is the final hiking day to Ciudad Perdida. It will start early in the morning, climbing up steps for one hour to the last part of the well-designed Tayrona trail, that will take us to the monumental city of the royal Tayrona Culture. Here, we will have magnificent views, overlooking the dense jungle and rugged terrain, each moment as we get closer becoming more and more special.

We will finally arrive and explore the Lost City for about 3 hours with a local guide that will give you a better understanding of how large and spectacular this place was and the importance of the Tayrona Culture.

On the last day of our expedition up in the Sierra range, we will walk back to Mamey town to get our transportation that will take us to the hotel.

We will celebrate the night with farewell dinner and couple of cocktails.

CARTAGENA

A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the coast of the Caribbean Sea, Cartagena is the most famous and visited Colombia's city. Tourists are most attracted to the remarkably intact historic walled colonial city ("ciudad amurallada") and the beachfront area of Bocagrande.

In the morning, we will have a transfer for 4 ½ hours on the main Pan-American highway to Cartagena De Indias old city, to check into the hotel, and spend the afternoon exploring the fantastic narrow streets with colourful balconies and great atmosphere.

Before it gets dark, we will join the best salsa place in town to be part of a local salsa lesson with the expert salsa dancers in Cartagena. Once we get a bit into party mode, we will join in the best and most authentic way of partying in the Caribbean, on a CHIVA. This is a type of bus that drives around the best and most scenic parts of the city while partying with some good local rum and traditional colombian music.

CARTAGENA

In the morning, we will have a guided city tour where we will learn about the city sights such as: San Felipe de Borajas Fortress, considered the biggest label from the Spanish in Latin-America, La Popa hill and monastery known as the highest point in the city, Cartagena bay, as well as a walking guided tour in the old town with is the most impressive conservation of the Spanish architecture.

We will have a free afternoon to relax and chill out in town.

DEPARTURE DAY

Challenging. This program will run in the tropical Santa Martha range, hiking for 4 days up through the jungles of the Caribbean of Colombia. Some snorkelling activities, plus small car roads for biking downhill from Minca cloud forest.

All prices are based on double occupancy. If you are travelling solo, you will be matched with another participant of your same gender. If you prefer to have a single room, please contact AJ prior to your departure to arrange your accommodation at an extra cost.


MEALS

Travelling with Adventure Journeys you will have the possibility to experience and taste local food and snacks. Your guide will help you identify typical food and suggest the best places to enjoy it. Some meals are not included in order to give you some flexibility about where, what and with whom to eat. You have the option to share these meals with the group, however there is no obligation to do this. If you have any allergies or food restrictions, please inform AJ prior to your departure.



YOUR TRIP LEADERS AND GUIDES

All AJ guides and trip leaders are highly experienced, licensed to operate in Ecuador and certified as Wilderness Adventure First Aid responders. We
always carry a complete first aid kit in our trips. In some location and for some activities, local guides join the trip leaders to provide an added service. In the Galapagos Islands, minimum 4 participants for the AJ trip leader service are required.


SUSTAINABLE ECO AND CULTURAL TOURISM

Clients receive a conservationist interpretation of the ecology of the Caribbean coast of Colombia. We will have talks about the factors that threaten it. We love to promote long-term conservation of local cultural identity. Your visit will encourage the local cultures to support responsible ecotourism as a sustainable alternative to surrendering to the oil industry's destructive appetites. We transport out and recycle all non-organic garbage.
