Day 1: Quito
ARRIVAL IN QUITO
Welcome to Quito! The biggest, best-preserved colonial city of America was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The city is considered the Cultural Capital of South America and the second most important city of the old Inca Empire.
Depending on arrival time, you can spend your day exploring the old town of Quito and the surrounding area. Adventure Journeys can help you to organize a day trip. In the evening, one of our trip leaders will meet you at the hotel for a welcome briefing and there will be plenty of time to discuss details and answer any questions you may have regarding the adventure. Our first day is an informational and acclimation day.

Day 2: Cotopaxi
TREKKING IN COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARKCotopaxi, the snow-capped volcano is our main goal today. After breakfast, we will drive through the Andes enjoying magnificent views of the Avenue of Volcanoes. Once we reach the Cotopaxi National Park, we will have our first acclimation hike around Limpiopungo Lake at 13000ft (3800 meters) above sea level and see wild horses, wild bulls and some bird species. From here you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Cotopaxi volcano, one of the highest volcanoes in the world.
Trekking time: 2 hours on flat terrain around Limpiopungo lagoon
Elevation: 12,631 ft
In the afternoon we will get a transfer to the town of Patate, and stay in a very charming hacienda.

Day 3: Baños - Samari Spa
BIKING IN LLANGANATES NATIONAL PARK
This morning we will mountain bike from the Llanganates National Park down to the Pastaza River Canyon, enjoying the beautiful scenery of the cloud forest. The road brings us through some Andean farms and a beautiful canyon with many waterfalls. While descending into the jungle, we will have a breath-taking view of Baños, the town is very well known for its spectacular location right on the foothills of the Tungurahua volcano,which is active since 1999. This is one of the main attractions of this region! In the afternoon we will have some time to explore the town and then we will enjoy staying at the best Hotel-Spa in this area.

Day 4: Kayaking Arajuno river
FIRST JUNGLE EXPLORATION
Early in the morning we will start our drive across the eastern Andean range towards the Amazon basin. This journey of 3 hours will show you fascinating landscapes of the Amazon forest, huge waterfalls and small colorful local villages. Before we get
ready for kayaking, a picnic will be served on the river shore. While exploring the upper part of the Arajuno River and paddling downstream for 2 hours, we will be on the lookout for wildlife such as neo tropical otters, caimans, toucans, parrots, monkeys, etc. After reaching and checking in at the Itamandi eco-lodge you will have the possibility to go on a night hike to discover all the beautiful night-active creatures. Our guide will tell you a lot about the wildlife in the jungle.

Day 5: Kayaking Arajuno river
KAYAKING THE ARAJUNO RIVERToday we will paddle down the river for about two hours discovering the beauty and wildlife that inhabit this river. With some luck we may see neo tropical otters and caimans, also colourful tropical birds are quite common along the Arajuno. The animal shelter we are visiting today is home of different species of mammals, birds and reptiles that have been rescued and some have been reintroduced into the wild. Our support is essential for this project to continue. Later we will enjoy a picnic on the river side and then we will visit the Anaconda lagoon.
In the afternoon after arriving at the lodge we will canoe to Santa Barbara Community, so we can learn more about the Kichwa indigenous people. They are always happy to share their tradition and even some jungle food.

Day 6: Papallacta Hot Springs
PARROTS CLAY LICK - HOT SPRINGS AND CLOUD FOREST HIKEEarly in the morning, before breakfast, we will take the canoe up the Arajuno river to the parrots clay lick, to watch different types of this colorful birds. Then we will continue and have a quick stop to see the pocket monkey, the smallest primate in the world. After breakfast we will go back up to the Andes and stop at Guango reserve to enjoy a hot chocolate while watching the most incredible hummingbird species. Later we willcontinue to soak in the Papallacta volcanic hot springs.

Day 7: Quito
ARRIVAL IN QUITO
After breakfast we will hike for 2 hours into the Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve and learn about the flora and fauna of this ecosystem, which is known as the Cloud Forest. Along the trail we will see lots of bromeliads and orchids, sometimes we will find deer, rabbits and even tapir tracks. After this exploration you will have some time to relax once again at the volcanic waters. Later we will go to Quito.

Day 8: Departure Day
Today is the day of departure and our trip will end.

Moderate to easy: The hike in Cotopaxi is mostly on flat terrain but at high elevation, the biking includes some uphill (more than 1000 ft elevation gain) but there is always a backup driver behind the group giving support or a ride for the people that want to avoid the uphill, he jungle walks are moderate, but can become challenging in case of heavy rain; the kayaking on the Arajuno River needs no experience because it's on flat water.
Giant frame bikes with front suspension and disc brakes, helmets and gloves, Expedition and inflatable kayaks, dry bags, life jackets, paddles and a dugout canoes with outboard motor, rubber boots.
All prices are based on double-occupancy. If you are travelling solo, you will be matched with another participant of your same sex. If you prefer to have a single room, please contact AJ prior to your departure to arrange your accommodation at an extra cost.
Travelling with Adventure Journeys you will have the possibility to experience and taste local food and snacks. Your guide will help you identify typical food and suggest the best places to enjoy it. Some meals are not included in order to give you some flexibility about where, what and with whom to eat. You have the option to share these meals with the group, however there is no obligation to do this. If you have any allergies or food restrictions, please inform AJ prior to your departure.
YOUR TRIP LEADERS AND GUIDES
All AJ guides and trip leaders are highly experienced, licensed to operate in Ecuador and certified as Wilderness Adventure First Aid responders. We always carry a complete first aid kit in our trips.
In some location and for some activities, local guides join the trip leaders to provide an added service.
